Limitation or disability.
A disability or handicap is described as a limitation in functioning caused by birth, accident, or illness.
Most common disabilities
- Blind/visually impaired: children who are blind or visually impaired
- Deaf/hard of hearing: in children with a hearing disorder speech development is delayed, as well as contact with the outside world.
- Physical disability: the child has a physical limitation, such as paralysis or a missing limb.
- Down syndrome: this syndrome is an incurable chromosomal disorder caused at fertilization. It involves delayed mental development and several physical features and differences.
Following education with a disability
The Netherlands has ratified the UN convention on the rights of persons with a disability. The International convention on the rights of the child also states every child has the right to education. This means every child, including a child with a disability, has the right to tailored education. Children with a disability can go to a regular school or to a special education school.
