New in the school participation council.

Are you going to start in the school participation council? Or are you thinking about signing up? Then a lot will come your way. What does a school participation council member do exactly? How do you prepare? And what should you watch out for?

What is your role as a parent in the school participation council?

As a parent in the school participation council you talk about important school topics, such as school hours, safety, parent contributions and school policy. You represent the interests of all parents.

You are not there for yourself, but for all parents of the school. That is why it is important to listen to what parents find important. You speak for them in talks with the school management.

How do you prepare well?

Good preparation helps you feel more confident. At first, it is useful to do this:

This way you quickly find out what is expected of you and how you can join in thinking.

Can you take a course?

Yes, you can! There are special courses for new school participation council members, for example at VOO, AoB or Verus. You learn the rules and agreements from the law better. You get explanations about your rights and duties, such as the agreement right and the advisory right.

Most schools pay for this course for you. Always ask the school management or the chairperson of the school participation council. Many schools have a fixed provider for council courses. For staff, training is sometimes arranged through a union.

Besides the basic course there are also trainings on topics like:

  • working together in the council;
  • dealing with tough decisions;
  • contact with parents and staff.
