Capacity test to determine the right level.

Secondary schools can give a capacity test to students in year one or two. Primary school students did not take a final test in the 2019-20 school year and many lessons were missed due to corona. Because of this, it is uncertain if every student is at the right level. This capacity test can correct that.

The capacity test is part of the NP Education. The result of the test shows what a student can do and where extra support and guidance might be needed. This way a student can move to the best suitable education level. The test can give teachers extra information about a student’s transition possibilities. It can also help to explore the student’s ambition, talents, and development.

Not mandatory

The test is a tool and schools are not required to use it. The test is not necessary to decide if a student changes education level, slows down, or speeds up in education.

Role of parents

Parents must be involved, that is important. Schools must clearly explain to them the purpose of the capacity test and how they handle the results. Based on the test result, a conversation should follow with the parents and student about the best suitable level. Parents can refuse to let their child take the capacity test.

Opportunity for smooth transition

Some students have delays or setbacks due to the effects of corona. Still, these students must have the same chances to find the best place. This can be done by using a capacity test, but a school can also choose to be more flexible with transition norms. This gives students more time and space to develop and the chance to do their best throughout their school career. You can read more about this in the guide ‘Opportunity for smooth transition’.

Role of the school participation council

The School participation council must also be informed about the capacity tests and their administration. Schools can apply for a subsidy until October 4 for this. Furthermore, the School participation council has approval authority over the promotion policy. Sterk Medezeggenschap has developed a special dialogue card for this.
