Dealing with gossip channels on social media.

28 September 2023 News

Via social media accounts, secondary school students anonymously spread rumors about fellow students and teachers. This online trend is a serious form of online bullying. What are rumor channels? What do you do if your child is involved in a rumor channel? And what should the school do?

Serious form of online bullying

On the social media app TikTok, videos appear in which rumors about fellow students and teachers are spread. The trend is inspired by the popular series Gossip Girl and the rumor channels on YouTube. This online form of bullying has profound and serious consequences. Students feel unsafe because of the videos and no longer dare to go to school.

Schools call on parents

Several schools sent a letter to parents asking them to pay attention to their child’s online behavior. The school advises parents to talk with their child to raise awareness about the consequences of online rumors and bullying.
