Excluding children from school activities is forbidden.

The bill about the parent contribution has been passed by the House of Representatives. Not paying the parent contribution is no longer allowed to be a reason to exclude students from school activities.

Ouders & Onderwijs has never hidden that it supports the law. “It is hard to explain that children cannot go on school trips or join lesson programs just because parents cannot pay the contribution,” says Lobke Vlaming, director of Ouders & Onderwijs.

Exclusion

The initiative bill came from the members of parliament Peter Kwint (SP) and Lisa Westerveld (GroenLinks). The law states that not paying the voluntary contribution cannot cause the exclusion of the student from an activity.

Voluntary

Before, it was unclear for parents if the contribution was really voluntary. Parents often felt pressure to pay the contribution. If not paid, children were likely to be excluded from activities.

Together with 18 organizations of parents, students, and teachers, Ouders & Onderwijs urged politics to vote for the law. The Senate will also vote on the law soon.
