Face mask advice at secondary schools.

From today the advice to wear a mask applies in secondary special education. After consultation with various education organizations the ministry decided this. What exactly does the advice mean?

The mask advice means that in secondary (special) education there is a recommendation to wear face masks outside lessons. This applies to situations where the one and a half meter distance between student and teacher cannot be maintained (such as in hallways and auditoriums). In classroom situations where students are seated, the mask can be removed.

Vocational Subjects

The urgent advice also applies to vocational subjects in pre-vocational secondary education and practical subjects in the practical education track where one and a half meter distance cannot be kept, as long as this does not endanger the safety of the lessons (for example, welding).

Students With A Disability

For students with a disability and/or care needs, who depend heavily on closeness and/or facial expressions, wearing a face mask is not realistic. It is up to the school management in secondary special education to decide in consultation with the school participation council for which students wearing a face mask is realistic.

Mandatory

Secondary schools decide themselves whether a face mask is mandatory. They set this in the student statute and work conditions, which the school participation council must agree with.

Additional Provisions

In student transport only the driver continues to wear a (surgical) face mask, not the students. The advice does not apply to primary education, because the infection risk for children of primary school age is significantly lower. At vocational and higher professional education, face masks can be chosen in some cases, but that is up to the institution.
