The House of Representatives approved the national education program on Tuesday. Several motions were passed. This includes that parents get a clear voice and the program period can be extended if needed.

Letter from Slob about plan for children not attending school

To start, outgoing minister Slob will send the House a letter before the summer recess (July 9) about using the extra funds from the NP Education for children not attending school. A motion was submitted by Kwint (SP) proposing that schools get extra money once to enroll and support children not attending school, but Slob is waiting to decide until after the letter. If Kwint thinks the plans in the letter are not enough, he can still put his motion to a vote. Our director Lobke Vlaming argued in a discussion with the House for using NP Education funds for children not attending school.

Role of parents important in NP Education

The motion from Bisschop (SGP) was accepted immediately. It urges giving interventions where schools and parents work directly together a clearer, separate place on the menu. This is good news! We believe the voice of parents must be included in the NP Education plans. In the debate on June 7, Slob said he sees this as part of further developing the menu. Did you know parents can participate in decisions about NP Education plans at school through the school participation council? This was emphasized again during the debate.

Possible extension of NP Education period

Finally, the period of the NP Education will remain 2.5 years for now. Two motions were passed that say the program can be extended if it shows during the period that this is necessary.

Focus points for the NP Education debate

Monday 7 June there was a debate in the House of Representatives about the national education program (NP Education). Ouders & Onderwijs is positive about the amount of 5.8 billion euros set aside for education, but has a few focus points. We see more value in structural investments to tackle the teacher shortage.
