Join the conversation about school advice and final test.

5 October 2018 News

The transition from primary school to secondary school is an important moment for children and parents. Soon the rules around the school advice and the final test in group 8 will be evaluated. We join the discussion and ask all parents to think along with us. What advice would you give the minister?

How was it again?

Before March 1 all students in group 8 get advice for secondary school. Based on the student monitoring system and your child’s personal traits, the teacher decides the school advice for your child. The advice can be a single or double advice, for example vmbo-tl or havo/vwo. This advice leads the registration for secondary school. You can deviate, but only if parents and school agree. In April or May your child then takes the final test. Is the result higher than the original advice? Then the primary school must look at the school advice again. Changing it is not needed. Is the advice changed? Then the secondary school must accept your child at that level.

It does not always go well

Through our information point we hear every year what goes less well. For example, we spoke with parents at the start of this year during a webinar and collected questions, bottlenecks and parents’ experiences in a report in spring. We wrote a letter to the House of Representatives in 2016 and reacted to letters from the minister in 2016 and 2017. We also wrote a critical blog about pressure from parents and did a long-term study with parents.

What do you say to the minister?

Soon the government will look again at the new rules. What works well? And what can be better? The ministry asks us to think along. So we ask you the question:

If you could give the minister one advice about the school advice and the final test, what would that be?

Let us know via vraag@oudersonderwijs.nl

Does your child not have school advice yet because he is still in primary school? Then we also want to hear what you think about the information you get from school until now.

Fill in the poll too

Do you want to think more? Soon we hold a poll about the school advice with parents in the Landelijk Ouderpanel. We will take this information to the minister. So sign up now via the link below!
