Most parents against early Christmas holiday.

13 December 2021 News

The Christmas holiday should not be brought forward by a week. That is what a majority of parents think. This is shown by a survey by Ouders & Onderwijs among more than 1,700 parents. Of the parents who took part in the survey, 60% say that schools will stay open as far as they are concerned.

Parents say their children had to miss many lessons this school year. No less than 75% of children have missed lessons this school year due to corona. This was mainly due to teacher absence and children having cold symptoms themselves. No less than 44% of parents say their child stayed home 3 or more times this school year because of corona.

New measures

The new measures do not all get support from parents. Especially the face masks from group 6 on primary group are not a fitting measure according to a majority (53%) of parents. Self-testing from group 1 gets support from only 22% of parents. Half of the parents do support a booster shot for teachers (49%). In general, parents find the measures at schools more than enough. Only a quarter of parents think more measures should come.

Cabinet

Next week, the cabinet will decide on possible extra measures in education. Earlier, OMT advised a longer Christmas holiday and preventive self-tests for all primary school children. The cabinet already said yesterday that it is not planning to close schools for now.

Research

This research was done among the Landelijk Ouderpanel and via an open questionnaire. It is a poll, not representative research. The questionnaire was completed by 1,708 parents. Among the respondents, parents with children in primary education are overrepresented. Want to know more? Check all research data in the report.
