Parents Against Changing School Holidays.
Most parents prefer no changes to school holidays. Almost three quarters do not want a longer Christmas holiday and shorter summer holiday. This emerges from a study by Ouders & Onderwijs among more than 12,000 parents.
During the corona period, there were mainly school closures in the winter months. It is expected that corona infections will increase again in those months. The ministry therefore wanted to know from parents whether they think the school holidays should be adjusted so that students miss as few lessons as possible.
Shorten summer holiday
One possibility is to extend the Christmas holiday and shorten the summer holiday. The Christmas holiday would then last three weeks instead of two, and the summer holiday five weeks instead of six. Seventy-four percent of parents do not agree with this. On the other hand, 19 percent think it is a good idea.
Teachers
Teachers are also not enthusiastic about the plan. The General Education Union (AoB) asked 22,000 members, and three quarters opposed it, while only 16 percent were in favor.
Clear signal
Because changing the school holidays is a drastic decision, the cabinet wanted to know how different parties think about it. Parents have definitely sent a clear signal, and Ouders & Onderwijs will certainly take this into account in discussions with the ministry.
