Parents demand improvements in tailored education.
Smaller classes, a personal development budget for homebound students, letting parents choose if their child goes to a regular or special school, and setting up independent regional parent support points. These are some proposals that Ouders & Onderwijs makes in the today published report the Staat van de Ouder to improve Tailored Education.
He Is Here! The Staat Van De Ouder 2020
The Staat van de Ouder is about Tailored Education this year. The aim is good education for everyone. Also for students who need extra help. With the 2014 law for Tailored Education, it seemed possible for every student to have a fitting place in education. All children had to feel at home at a school that fits their skills and possibilities. So each child can get the best out of themselves. But did these hopes come true?
60% Of Parents Are Unhappy
Research by Ouders & Onderwijs shows 60% of parents are unhappy with how Tailored Education works in practice. Each year Ouders & Onderwijs gets thousands of complaints from parents about Tailored Education. These parents get stuck between their child’s interests and what the school can and wants to offer. They fight to get extra attention and changes for their children. They often hear: ‘Can’t’, ‘May not’, ‘Don’t know’, and ‘Doesn’t fit’. This sometimes causes big conflicts between parents and school. Sometimes children do not get any education for years.
Recommendations To Improve Tailored Education
This can and must be better. That is why Ouders & Onderwijs asked parents what they want changed in Tailored Education. The today published Staat van de Ouder collects these ideas. In the fall the Tweede Kamer will talk with the minister about what to do next with Tailored Education. Strong action is needed to make real change for children and their parents. Order the basics of education, support teachers better, and make sure the money for Tailored Education reaches the classroom. Provide custom help for children who really need something different. Support parents better and respect their rights and place. Have the Education Inspectorate check much better if school governing bodies follow the rules. These are just a few of the ideas parents have.
