School advice group 8: what you need to know.

16 January 2025 News

Between January 10 and 31, children in group 8 receive the school advice. This is an important moment for children and parents. It tells which level your child can follow in secondary school.

How does the school advice work?

The school advice is given between January 10 and 31. This decides which level your child can attend in secondary school. This advice is based on a combination of your child’s learning results, motivation, and work attitude. The school advice points to the level that best fits your child, such as vmbo, havo, or vwo.

Provisional or final?

The school advice in January is provisional and only becomes final after the secondary school transition test is taken. If the test result is higher than the advice your child has received, the school must raise the advice to the test level. Only if the school thinks it is not in the child’s best interest to change the advice, and can explain this, then the school does not have to adjust the advice.

If the test result is the same or lower, nothing changes and the January advice becomes the final school advice. You can talk to the school as a parent if you have questions or doubts about the school advice.
