School As A Healthier Environment.

26 November 2018 News

The Netherlands must become healthier. That is why a National Prevention Agreement was made about tackling smoking, overweight, and problem drinking. There is still much to gain in schools regarding health. Director Lobke Vlaming signed the agreement on behalf of Ouders & Onderwijs.

Healthier Dutch People

To be less sick, need less care, and give a good example to children, it is important to make healthier choices. The signatories hope that by 2040 children will no longer know the smell of tobacco smoke, alcohol use will be normal only from age 18, and fewer children and adults will have overweight and diabetes. About 70 organizations signed the agreement, including many education organizations.

Effects On School

The prevention agreement includes a number of specific agreements about schools. The agreements will apply from 2020 and aim to lead to behavior changes that ensure healthier Dutch people by 2040. The main agreements:

  • Smoking: From 2020, there will be no more smoking on and around school grounds. Smoking will also become more expensive and sales limited. The goal is a smoke-free generation by 2040.
  • Overweight: Drinking water points will be placed in and near schools, no sugary drinks will be sold at school from 2020, and walking and cycling to work or school will be encouraged.
  • Alcohol use: Education on alcohol use by expert teachers at schools, involving parents in this.

Role Of Parents Is Essential

Many organizations were involved in drawing up the agreement. Ouders & Onderwijs also provided input. We mainly pushed for clarity for parents, so they know what they can expect from schools on these themes. We also stress that parents must have the chance to actively think along about the schools’ policies. With a big role for parents in the school participation council, which formally discusses health policy.
