In the Netherlands, over 3.3 million people have one or more children under 18 living at home. That is almost a quarter of all people allowed to vote on March 17 in the House of Representatives elections. It is an important and unmissable group that votes not only for themselves but also for the future of their child(ren). To help this group with their political choice, Ouders & Onderwijs and Stichting Voor Werkende Ouders developed a special election guide for parents: Election Guide Parents.

The election guide gives parents insight into the views of political parties on education, upbringing, childcare, and care. Lobke Vlaming, director Ouders & Onderwijs: ‘Parents with children under 18 years make up nearly a quarter of all voters. It is logical that politics pays attention to topics important to parents, such as good education, affordable childcare, and a good work-life balance. With this election guide, we want to help parents choose a political party that supports their interests and opinions.’

The voice of parent and child

The Netherlands has more than 3.3 million children under 18 years. They are not allowed to vote yet. Parents therefore vote not only for their own interests but also for the interests of their child(ren). Besides major topics like care, economy, and the environment, there are topics that are especially important for parents. Such as the teacher shortage, class size, accessibility of childcare, and leave arrangements. Election guide parents is about these very topics.

Marjet Winsemius, director Stichting Voor Werkende Ouders: ‘Right now, there are many choices for parents regarding the House of Representatives elections. The coming cabinet period will require big decisions on themes like the teacher shortage, expansion and simplification of leave arrangements, and financing of childcare. For parents, it is good to use our election guide to see where they stand on these topics and which political party best fits them.’
