Use of Npo Funds Unclear For Parents.

17 November 2022 News

The corona period asked a lot from children. Social life stopped for a while. Education also suddenly changed. The corona period and measures at schools have affected education. Many children have fallen behind because of this. That is why schools get extra money from the government. This is called the National Education Program (NPO). Schools get money to catch up on delays caused by corona. They also pay extra attention to mental health. Most parents do not know what schools do with this money or how their children benefit. This appears from the research by Ouders & Onderwijs and Voor Werkende Ouders.

Information provision

More than half of the parents (66%) say they are not informed about the NPO. An even larger group (79%) does not know what it means for their child. Almost half of the parents surveyed (42%) do not know about the National Education Program at all. Half (50%) of the parents want more information about what school does with the NPO funds.

'Schools have a lot on their plate these days. Yet it is very important to inform parents well about what happens to the NPO funds for their child. Parents could also be better informed about how they can contribute themselves. That is in the interest of the school, parents and especially the children.' - Lobke Vlaming.

Partnership with parents

The research shows that parents want more clarity about the use of the NPO funds at school. What interventions from the National Education Program does the school use? And what does that mean for individual students? Schools should inform parents better about this.

We call on teachers and lecturers to better inform and involve parents in what the school does with the NPO funds. Then parents know what they can expect from the school and that strengthens the cooperation between school and parents. We also ask OCW to pay more attention to informing and involving parents. The role of parents is crucial in solving the delays.
