Parental involvement does not mean that you always have to be present at school. You can also do a lot at home by showing interest, talking with your child about school and creating a nice environment to learn. Talk with your child about school and the future

One of the most important ways to be involved in your child’s education is by talking with your child about school. By showing interest in what your child learns and experiences, you show that school is important. This can contribute to your child’s confidence, motivation and enjoyment at school. 

• Ask what your child has learned at school. 
• Talk about what your child likes or finds difficult. 
• Discuss interests, talents, dreams and future wishes. 
• Encourage a positive attitude towards learning. 
• Give compliments for effort and perseverance, not just for good results. 

Involvement at home

There are also many ways to be involved in your child’s education at home. You do not have to be a teacher to support your child. Small moments of attention and interest can already make a big difference. 

• Read books together or read aloud. 
• Help your child with homework or assignments when needed. 
• Practice language, math or other skills playfully. 
• Show interest in what your child does at school. 
• Provide a quiet environment where your child can read, learn or do homework. 

Involvement at school

Besides involvement at home, you can also be involved in activities at school. This helps you stay informed about your child’s development and contributes to good cooperation between parents and school. 

• Attend parent-teacher meetings to discuss your child’s development. 
• Help with excursions, school trips or other activities. 
• Become a reading parent or library volunteer and support children with reading. 
• Help as a class parent with organizing activities or communication between parents and school. 
• Participate in the parent council or school participation council if you want to think along about activities or policy at school. 

Not everything is necessary

It is not possible for every parent to be regularly present at school. Fortunately, there are different ways to be involved. Research shows that showing interest, talking with your child about school and paying attention to the future can make a big difference. Even if you have less time, you can still play an important role in your child’s development.
