Tailored education in mbo.

Vocational education must be accessible to as many students as possible. Also if there is a disability, illness, or disorder. How does that work? And what are the rules? We explain this to you.

What is tailored education?

Tailored education means education that fits the possibilities and talents of every vocational student. This includes students with a disorder, illness, or disability. They can get extra help at school. Vocational education does not have separate schools or education forms for students who need special or intensive support. Vocational education is different from primary schools and secondary education.

Study choice and tailored education

When choosing a suitable vocational course, your child’s disability can play a role. To what extent does the disability make it hard to get a diploma or find work in the field? The vocational school talks with your child about this during the intake meeting after registration. In that talk, they also discuss which support your child needs and what the school can offer. The vocational school records the agreements in the education contract.

Right to adjustment during the study

Vocational schools must clearly describe which support they can offer to students. The support offer is on the school’s website. In many cases your child has the right to adjustments in education based on a disability. This is in the law about equal treatment based on handicap or chronic illness. Your child can have fewer hours of education or internship or adjustments to the exam. There is one condition: the adjustments must not ask too much from the school and the level of the study must stay the same.

May the mbo school refuse because of a disability?

In some cases a school can refuse a student because of a disability. If extra support is too much for the school, it does not have to admit the student. The school must clearly explain why it really cannot provide the support. Then the school must help your child find another suitable program. The school will give your child advice in that case.

Rights of parents

Many parents want to be involved in deciding the support for their child. In practice, this is sometimes difficult. Your child is older and more independent than ever. Your child’s age decides your rights as a parent. Is your child underage? Then you remain responsible as a parent. You can attend meetings, and you sign the education agreement and other forms and papers. Is your child 18 or older? Then your child is responsible. You can still attend meetings but only with your child’s permission.

Problems during the program?

Even if everything was agreed on before, problems can happen. For example, if your child does not get the agreed support. Or it is hard to find an internship or training place because of the disability. Then contact our advice point. We will give you tailored advice and help you look for a solution.
