Refused at the mbo, what now?.
Sometimes a child is refused for a mbo course. This cannot happen without reason. What are the rules? And what can you do if you do not agree? We explain that here.
Valid reasons for refusal
If your child goes to an mbo course, the school can refuse your child. Is that allowed? No, but there are some exceptions:
- Your child does not meet extra requirements. Some courses can ask for further education requirements. This means certain school subjects are needed for the course. For example, in the technical sector a diploma with mathematics, or physics and chemistry can be required. Besides a diploma, it can also be about special skills or qualities needed for a job. You can think of some art courses.
- There are more applications than places. Then a course can use a lottery or place students by order of application. The course website shows how many places the course has. It also tells what happens if there are too many applications.
- Your child did not join a mandatory intake activity.
- A student signed up after 1 April. Then the school can also select by grades or motivation.
- Your child has received three times a negative binding study advice on an mbo course, or has followed mbo courses for six years without getting a diploma.
- Your child does not agree with the faith of the mbo school. Courses with a faith can refuse the student.
- If your child cannot get a diploma or cannot do the job because of a disability. The school must explain this well in writing. They then look with your child for a suitable other course.
If you do not agree with refusal
Does the mbo school refuse your child for another reason than above? Or do you not agree for another reason? Then you can take these steps:
- File a written objection within six weeks with the course.
- The JOB gives mbo students advice.
