Your child is not doing well at school.

When your child has problems at school or things are not going well, the school works with you to improve the situation. But what can you expect in this situation? We explain this in a few steps. If you have questions during this process, you can always contact Ouders & Onderwijs.

Step 1: talk together

The teacher or you see that your child is not doing well at school. There can be different causes. Your child may not keep up, is unhappy, or the teacher finds it hard to guide your child. Teacher and parents raise the alarm and start talking. Do we need to worry? What should we worry about? What does the school think? What do you think about the situation? And what steps can be taken?

Step 2: gather information

After this talk, it is good to gather information. What steps can the school take, what may and can the school do? What can you expect and ask from the school? You can definitely contact our information point. Also, information can be found on the own school’s website, or on the website of the partnership Tailored Education.

Step 3: research the problem

The research phase begins. What is needed to understand the situation? Sometimes an internal support coordinator or care coordinator from the school looks at your child. Sometimes someone else is involved. Using people outside the school can only happen with the parents’ agreement and permission.

Step 4: make a plan

The research phase results in a plan. Sometimes the school can guide your child inside the school. Sometimes extra help from outside is needed. This support is started in agreement with the parents. As much as possible, this is done at the child’s school. This plan is written down in the development perspective plan. In some schools, such a plan has a different name: for example an action plan, growth document or child plan.

Step 5: evaluate the plan

The plan that was carried out is evaluated. Has the child been given a good place in the school with the changes? Should something extra be done? The school talks with the parents (and if possible with the child) about the situation. What helped? What did not help? What do we change and try again? With a changed plan, step 4 is done again.

Step 6: another school

If the school, despite all plans, cannot organize a good place for your child, the school and parents look for a good next step for the child. Another regular school nearby may give the right support. The child may transfer to special education. The school where your child is registered has the duty of care to provide a good place.

Active involved parents achieve the most

The best results come from children whose parents are actively involved in school. At all steps described here, there is always room to talk with Ouders & Onderwijs. The better the talks between parents and school and the better parents inform themselves, the better the solution will be.
