10 differences in education between past and present.
Education has gone through big changes over the years. Where parents might remember chalkboards and notebooks, your child's school day now looks very different. We take you through 10 striking differences between education then and now.
From chalkboard to smartboard
Did you ever have ‘blackboard eraser duty’? In the past, every classroom had a large chalkboard where the teacher wrote with chalk. Today, those boards are replaced by interactive smartboards, where both writing and digital information can be shared. These boards make lessons much more dynamic for students.
Digital projects
Instead of paper reports, children now make digital presentations or videos. Schools no longer only teach students to write but also how to present information using digital tools.
Schoolbooks versus online learning materials
Where students used to carry large, heavy backpacks of all sizes, many schools now use online platforms for learning materials. Textbooks are mostly replaced by digital versions accessible via tablets or laptops. These laptops now come with fancy backpacks with an extra protective compartment.
Nature and sustainability
Sustainability is a hot topic, also at schools. More and more projects focus on the environment, recycling, and nature conservation. Schools also take students outside more for lessons and activities so they learn about the world around them instead of just from books.
Memorizing versus understanding
In the past, education was often about memorizing facts and lists. Today the focus is more on understanding the material and using it in different situations. It is not just about what you know but also how you can use it.
From sitting still to active lessons
Where students used to sit quietly in their chairs, lessons now offer much more variety. Active learning has become popular, with more time for group work, movement, and interactive tasks. Classroom furniture is now much more varied.
Flexible school hours
Some schools have changed traditional school hours. Schools try flexible start and end times to better match the needs of parents and students. Also, students often no longer go home during breaks. They stay at school to eat and play. Because of this, students often finish earlier.
Calculators instead of counting beads
Where counting beads were once used to learn math, later calculators appeared. Today, there are advanced math apps and tools that help students with more complex problems, often even without a physical calculator. Laptops or tablets are used for this.
One way of learning versus personalized education
In the past, all students got the same lessons at the same pace. Today, schools try much more to match the individual learning needs of students. Whether a child needs extra support or seeks more challenge, there is more room for customization.
Report cards and progress reports
Where you used to get only a list of grades at the end of the period, many schools now give interim progress reports with detailed feedback. It is not just about grades but also about skill and behavior development. Teachers look at where your talents lie. Sometimes they even add nice photos.
