The central final exam at secondary schools goes ahead this school year, but there are some adjustments. According to Minister Slob, students can earn a full diploma through additional measures. But what exactly are the principles and additional measures? We provide an overview.

What remains?

All students take their school exams, college exams (in case of the state exam) and central exams.

Extra adjustments

For the final exams in the 2020/2021 school year, the following adjustments apply:

  • One subject can be removed to pass
Every student takes exams in all subjects. If the student still does not pass, they may remove one subject to pass. But that may not be a core subject. For vmbo this is Dutch, for havo and vwo these are Dutch, also English, and if applicable, math (A, B or C). The final grade of the removed subject remains visible on the report card.
  • Extra support for exam students
Exam students who need extra support get more options. Schools receive extra money to organize guidance. Also, a new online platform will launch on March 1 where exam materials are explained. This platform is freely accessible for exam students.
  • Good transition
Even if a student has passed, extra support is possible to ensure a good transition to further education. The details will follow.

Earlier, some adjustments for the exam were already announced:

  • Every student gets two retakes, so a total of 2 subjects instead of 1.
  • There is an extra time slot. Students who take their first chance of the central exam in one or more subjects in the second time slot will have a possible retake in a third extra time slot this school year.
  • The second time slot is longer. It is extended from 4 to 10 days. This allows students who are sick or in quarantine during the first time slot to take the entire central exam in the second time slot. Also, students can move one or more subjects to the second time slot to have more preparation time for these subjects.
  • Schools have more time to submit school exam grades. Results must be available at the latest one day before the start of the first time slot. In case of digitally flexible exams, one day before the central exam of the relevant subject.

Vmbo

The above measures also apply to exam candidates at vmbo. Furthermore, there are extra changes for vmbo students:

  • Students who take an exam in the vocational profile subject complete this subject with a school exam in the 2020-2021 school year. This replaces the central written and practical exam (cspe).
  • Schools can organize digitally flexible exams (central exams) in vmbo basic vocational and vmbo middle management vocational until July 23, 2021 at the latest.

State exam candidates

All the above measures also apply to state exam candidates who take their diploma exams in 2021. They can spread the central exam over time slot 1 and time slot 2. Also, there is one extra retake for the central exam and one extra retake for a college exam. This means they can retake two central exams and two college exams this year if it helps them pass.

State exam candidates can also remove a final grade and not have it count towards the result. Students taking certificates for individual subjects cannot retake and cannot remove a final grade. This is regrettable and Ouders & Onderwijs continues to pay attention to these students.

Determining results

The further conditions for determining final exam results remain the same. Such as the core subject rule, the 5.5 rule, and the maximum number of failing grades. Detailed information can be found in the ministry service document and on Mijneindexamen.
