It is the third Tuesday in September. The cabinet is demissionary and therefore no new education plans are expected this Prinsjesdag. The speech from the throne focused mainly on the National Program Tailored Education: the 8.5 billion euros spent on recovery and development of education after the corona period.

Equal opportunities

In the introduction of the speech from the throne, the King mentioned inequality of opportunity in education as one of the big domestic themes. Later, he noted that in recent years much attention has been given to promoting equal opportunities in education and that this effort remains necessary.

Thanks

The King expressed his thanks for the efforts of all people in education and childcare during the corona crisis. He also mentioned the physical and mental effects of corona on old and young. About the National Program Tailored Education, the plan for recovery of education after the corona period, the King said the following: Looking ahead to necessary long-term choices, the government is making more than 8 billion euros available until the end of 2023 to catch up on educational delays caused by the corona period.’ The National Program Tailored Education has now started. No plans

Besides the National Program Tailored Education, there were no plans for education in the speech from the throne. Because this cabinet is demissionary and there is no new cabinet yet, it may not develop big new plans. According to the demissionary cabinet, the National Program Tailored Education could not wait because of the big delays caused by the corona crisis.

Teacher shortage

The large shortage of teachers and school leaders was not mentioned in the speech from the throne. Earlier in this cabinet period, extra funds were announced to reduce workload. In next year’s budget, the cabinet has included the last part of that money, making up to 430 million euros per year available from 2025 to reduce workload in primary education. At the request of the House of Representatives, the demissionary cabinet is also investing 60 million euros extra in the further development of teachers to make the profession more attractive.
