Holiday? Not for students without education place.

The holiday is near. Most lessons are learned, the reports discussed and handed out. And students know exactly which class they start next school year. Or do they? At Ouders & Onderwijs we speak with many parents who still do not have clarity about where their child can go after the summer holiday.

This can be because no place can be found. Hundreds of children and their parents go into the holiday not knowing what will happen next. These children go into the holiday without perspective, without knowing where they will go after the holiday. Without knowing if they will go anywhere at all after the holiday.

Not on holiday

There can be a little more attention for this group of children. Director Lobke Vlaming of Ouders & Onderwijs goes a step further. She calls on school governing bodies in an article on LinkedIn not to go on holiday before a suitable place is found for every child.

Gifted students

Kim Castenmiller also joins the debate. You probably know her from the report the State of the Home Sitters which pays extensive attention (with research and recommendations) to children without an education place. She draws attention to gifted students. In regular education some students can manage with an advanced class or adjusted teaching. However, for a significant part of gifted students that is not enough. They benefit from full-time gifted education.

And it is exactly that full-time gifted education that is under pressure. Fewer and fewer schools offer it. The result is that this group ends up at home. Castenmiller spoke with parents, children and young people about the lack of tailored education within basic education. Want to read more? Read the complete article.
