Recovery plan for education.

17 February 2021 News
Inclusief onderwijs

There is a recovery plan for education to better handle study delays during the corona period. The details of the so-called National Education Program were announced by ministers Arie Slob (Primary and Secondary Education) and Ingrid van Engelshoven (Education) on Wednesday during a press conference.

The largest part of the money (6 billion euros) goes to primary, secondary and special education. Primary schools receive on average 180,000 euros per school, for secondary schools the amount is about 1.3 million euros per school. If there are schools with large inequality of opportunity, the amount can be higher.

Measures

Several concrete measures are linked to the money. These include for preschool education, primary education, secondary education and special education the following:

  • Extension of the subsidy scheme for catch-up and support programs for toddlers who need preschool education.
  • Support to help students with delays in cognitive, social-emotional and executive areas.
  • Schools choose from a menu developed by scientists with proven effective measures for students.
  • If there are students at school who have more difficulties, they receive extra help and support.
  • Schools can partly stay open in the summer holidays for students who need it.
  • There are also opportunities outside regular school hours to offer extra tutoring to students in small groups.
  • Secondary schools that choose broad first-year classes are rewarded. This gives students more time to see where they fit best.

Opinion

Ouders & Onderwijs is positive about this extra support. Together with among others the Teachers Collective we have successfully argued that the money goes directly to the schools. This way the choice of spending lies directly with school teams with the agreement of the school participation council. This ensures that the money reaches the classroom as much as possible.
