Same registration week for equal chances.

The senate approved on Tuesday the bill that sets one registration week for all students for secondary school. This fixed moment must increase equal chances in education. The idea is that all students have the same chance to get a place at their preferred school. They will have to be patient because the changes will take effect only in the school year 2023/24.

For children who score higher on the final test than their advice shows, the teacher reconsiders the advice. And possibly adjusts it upwards. This does take time. At the moment, it happens that secondary schools are already full after an adjustment. This bill means that all students from group 8 register at the same time at a school for secondary education. This way, students with a changed school advice also get a fair chance to register at the same time.

School year 2023/24

The fixed registration moment for secondary school will be scheduled from the school year 2023/24 in the week before April 1 (from March 25 to March 30). With the new law, every student must have the same chance to get at the school of his or her choice. Currently, students can register at different times, which means children with an adjusted school advice have less chance to get into the desired school.

Final test becomes secondary school transition test

Another part of the law is that the final test in group 8 changes into a secondary school transition test. The test takes place in February. This is well before the registration moment. This is different from the current situation where it is the other way around. Cito will still make the test on behalf of the government. Private parties may also offer tests. The College for Tests and Exams keeps overseeing quality.

Very happy

Ouders & Onderwijs has always worked hard for this change in the law. We are very happy that it will finally happen for the students now in group 6.
