Tailored education and the reopening of schools.
From May 11, schools for primary school age children will reopen. This also applies to schools for special education. But what does this mean exactly and what does it mean for children who are sick or need extra support at school?
Small groups
Primary schools reduce the class size; children will go to school 50% of the time. Pupils at special primary education go back to school 100%. This is chosen because these groups are already smaller. Children at special primary education do not have to keep 1.5 meters distance from each other like in regular primary education. Children must keep 1.5 meters distance from adults (teachers and other staff) as much as possible. Adults (teachers and other staff) must keep 1.5 meters distance from each other.
Student transport
Many pupils use student transport to get to special primary education. This stays the same. No extra measures are needed. Keeping 1.5 meters distance between children is not required here. It is advised to keep distance from the driver as much as possible. This is because transmission between children and between a child and an adult is very limited. We hope the taxi company or municipality informs the parents about the resuming of taxi transport.
Risk group
In some cases, parents can choose not to send their child to school. This applies to children who belong to the risk group due to health, children living with someone in the risk group, and children of parents working with a risk group. Every parent decides if it is safe to send their child to school. The treating doctor or employer can give advice. Always contact the school to see what is possible. Parents do not need to be afraid of a fine when they do not send their child to school. The truancy officers do not give fines.
Children with a chronic illness can be tested if they have complaints, after consulting the treating doctor. The same applies to the caregiving parent(s) and other family members.
Extra support
Pupils who get extra support at school are often more vulnerable. We ask schools to pay attention to these pupils. It is important for parents to know how school will look for their child and what to expect. Parents and school can then look together at how to start education at school again. External help such as ambulant guidance is available when schools open again. Also, emergency care for vulnerable children remains possible and schools can give priority or let these pupils come to school more often. For more information, contact the school or the municipality.
Medical procedures
Some pupils need help at school with toileting, physical restraint, or medical procedures. This needs physical contact. These pupils can go to school. Staff use protective equipment as much as possible. If restraint is often needed, the school can consider other measures for the pupil attending school.
Communication with school
Good communication between parents and school is always important. Now, in times of fear, uncertainty and doubt, this is even more important. Many parents have questions. Questions that schools cannot always answer immediately. Our advice is to ask the school questions as soon as possible. Schools need time to organize things. Contact between school and parents will be only digital or by phone from now on.
Children staying at home and distance learning
Before this corona crisis, many pupils already stayed home (temporarily) without education or went to school only a few hours a week. Now many pupils get distance learning and schools show they can do this well. This can offer opportunities for children staying at home, now and in the future. We want to hear about the experiences. Are you a parent of a child staying at home? Let us know how your child is doing and how cooperation with school goes. Email to marieke.boon@oudersonderwijs.nl.
