On Wednesday 30 March the House of Representatives spoke with Minister Wiersma about tailored education. The reason for the debate was a progress report on the plans that the previous minister, Arie Slob, presented in 2020. Ouders & Onderwijs, together with 19 organizations, sent a letter to the members of parliament. Many topics were discussed during the debate. We mention a few.

Student transport

Ouders & Onderwijs published a report on student transport on Monday. It showed that there are many problems with transport; students spend a very long time in the van. This topic was also discussed in the debate. Following the report, the minister will talk to municipalities about shortening the travel time to a maximum of 45 minutes. In addition, the minister wants a national monitor to map the quality of student transport.

Legislative proposals on tailored education

There are currently many legislative proposals about tailored education in progress. Among them are the right to be heard and an approach for truancy. Minister Wiersma wants to speed up these laws and bundle them. He has promised to shortly after the debate send an overview of expected legislative proposals and the bundling of these proposals. Wiersma will also send a status update on the improvement approach. At the end of 2022 the minister will present a roadmap for inclusive education.

Gifted children, school refusers and the right to education.

The minister wants to have an approach plan for gifted children before the summer. School refusers were also not left out: shortly (before summer) the minister wants to send the elaboration of the policy on school refusers to the House of Representatives. In this, he also wants to include the plan for a digital school for school refusers. Member of parliament Van Meenen (D66) announced that he has improved his legislative proposal for the right to education.

This is how the minister wants to improve tailored education faster. Ouders & Onderwijs is certainly happy with the attention to the problems we also raised in our letter. We will follow the elaboration of the plans closely.

There will soon be a two-minute debate where members of parliament can submit motions to possibly adjust the policy.

More money for tailored education necessary

Wednesday is the debate on Tailored Education with Minister Wiersma in the House of Representatives. In a letter, we earlier called on the committee members to free up budget for the improvement measures of Tailored Education. The plans presented in 2020 by then Minister Slob did not include a financial section. This is worrying because the plans now have to be financed with money intended for care students.
