Schools in secondary education can offer an extra program besides the regular program. For example, schools with a sports class, bilingual education, culture profile schools, or technasia. These schools are also called profile schools or schools with a profile class. Discover the features of these different types of schools or classes.
Bilingual education
Bilingual education is for students who want to orient internationally. Most schools offer English as a second language, but some profile schools offer German.
In the lower grades of havo and vwo, at least 50 percent of the lessons are in the other language. In vmbo, it is at least 30 percent. In the upper grades, bilingual schools still focus on the other language, but students also prepare for the Dutch (and Dutch-language) final exam. Bilingual education is offered at vmbo, havo, and vwo. Skill tests can be taken for admission.
Culture profile schools
Culture profile schools are profile schools where education about art and culture plays a major role. This means that art and culture are often on the schedule, several art disciplines are included, and art subjects work closely with other subjects.
The curriculum is supplemented with various cultural out-of-school activities. Culture profile schools are not only for top talents. Students interested in art and culture can also attend. There are now 40 culture profile schools.
Technasium
A technasium is a profile school for havo, atheneum, and gymnasium where the subject Research and Design is offered as an exam subject in one of the natural science profiles.
This subject differs from other science subjects because gaining experience, developing skills, and applying knowledge in real-life contexts are central. In this subject, students design a technical product.
This involves current, technical questions from real clients. The client is usually a company in the area. Technasium schools are organized in regional networks with about five secondary schools around a university or university of applied sciences. The Technasium Foundation takes care of quality control. There are about 70 technasia, in 14 networks.
Profile class with sports
Some secondary schools also offer a separate sports class. In a sports class, students get more sports than in other classes. Motivation or a practical test is often required.
Top sports talent schools
Top sports talent schools are united in an organization of thirty top sports talent schools in secondary education.
Top sports talent schools can offer students with a top sports talent status a tailored education program. This makes it possible for students with this status to combine education with their top sports. Getting a top sports talent status is done through the sports federation. This happens based on criteria set by the federation.
DAMU schools
DAMU schools are schools with a special setup in dance and/or music. Here students can combine school with professional contemporary dance or music education. This better prepares them for further study in higher professional education. These schools can require admission conditions, such as an audition with a positive result.
