Math exam mbo.

Since the 2022-2023 school year, the maths exam is a compulsory part of your child's mbo education. What is the maths exam? Is it part of your diploma? And can you view the results? We will explain.

What is the maths exam?

The maths exam is a test that measures if your child can do enough maths. The test aims to improve maths skills. Your child is prepared at school for the test and the mbo school might offer extra maths lessons. These lessons cover numbers, ratios, connections, and measuring and geometry. Do not confuse the maths exam with the maths test. The latter is for secondary school students.

Test taking and retaking

The mbo school decides when your child must take the maths exam. They also choose if your child takes the test digitally or on paper. The school chooses between two types of maths exams: the digital exam by the College for Tests and Exams or its own institution exam. Your child must get this information on time from the mbo school to prepare well. Did your child not pass? Each student gets two chances, but the school can give more chances. Read more about the rules on the government website.

Does the result count?

If your child took the maths exam, the result will be on the diploma. The result does not yet count for all students. If your child takes an entrance course or started before 2022, the result does not count. Did your child start from 2022? Then the result counts. Your child must get at least a 6 for the maths exam. If the mark for Dutch is 6 or higher, your child can pass the maths exam with a 5. A 4.5 is also rounded up to 5.

Inspection test and results

For digital exams, your child immediately sees the result afterwards. The screen then shows the questions, answers, and what the answers should have been. If your child’s school uses its own institution exams, the mbo school itself makes the rules about inspection and retakes. These rules are in

Switching to another program

If your child switches to another program within mbo, your child can request an exemption for the math exam from the exam committee of the program. Has your child already completed the math exam at the correct level with a good grade? Then you usually get an exemption. Contact details of the exam committee can be found in the education and exam regulation of the mbo school.

Adjusted math exam

In some cases, your child can qualify for an adjusted math exam: the ER exam. For example, if your child has dyscalculia or other math problems. The exam is not easier, but your child can use more tools like a calculator and math cards. Your child also gets more time for the exam. You cannot just claim this. The math problems must have been diagnosed earlier, for example in secondary school. Your child is trained by the mbo school for the adjusted exam and there is a file that records everything. You can apply at the exam committee. You can find contact details in the education and exam regulation.

From the school year 2022-2023, students with serious math problems or dyscalculia can take the ER exam in periods 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5. For students who start from 1 August 2022 or started in the first year at mbo, the new math rules apply. The exam grade counts for the diploma. There is no separate exam anymore for students with serious math problems or dyscalculia. But they can use tools like a calculator, math cards, having the text read aloud, marking text, enlarged text, pictures and graphs. The school can also schedule extra time for students who are weak in math to make the exam.
