School exams.
In the upper grades of secondary school your child takes tests that count for the final exam. These are school exams. Schools mostly decide how these look. What rules apply? Here you can read all about it.
When are the school exams?
The school exams start in many schools already in 3 vmbo and 4 havo and vwo. This means your child takes some tests that count for the final exam from that moment. It differs per school when the school exams happen.
Rules in the program for testing and completion and exam regulations
What rules apply to the school exam? The government determines the subjects. The division of the lessons between the central exam and the school exam is fixed in the exam program.
Secondary schools set their own rules for the school exam. These rules are in two documents: the exam regulations and the program for testing and completion. The teacher of your child grades the school exams.
Subjects with only school exam
Some subjects have no central exams. The grades for those subjects consist only of school exams. This is for example true for the sector assignment in vmbo and the profile assignment in havo and vwo.
Also for a subject like social studies there is only a school exam. Your child finishes these subjects at least one week before the start of the central exams.
Finish school exam with grade list
The school exam must be finished before your child starts the central final exam. Before the first exam period, your child gets the grade list with all results that count for the exam.
The director and exam secretary are responsible for the results. Still, it is smart to check the grades well to fix mistakes quickly. Your child signs the grade list on receipt. The director and exam secretary also sign the document.
If your child could not finish a subject due to force majeure, there is still time until one week before the central exam in that subject, even if exams for other subjects have started. Make sure this grade is not on the grade list to be signed, but sign separately later for it.
