Costs mbo program
If your child goes to mbo, you face different school costs:
- Legally required tuition and course fees: paid by parents or student
- Basic school equipment: paid by the mbo school
- Basic work equipment: paid by the training company
- School supplies: paid by the parents or student
- Voluntary contribution for extra activities: paid by the parents or student
Legally required tuition and course fees
A student who registers for an mbo program pays the legally required tuition or course fees. Does your child follow a full-time BOL program? Then you pay the legally set tuition. Students who follow a BBL program or a part-time BOL program pay the legally set course fees. More information and the amount are on the government website. Mbo students under 18 do not pay tuition or course fees.
Basic school equipment
Some programs need tools. For example, knives for a cooking program, scissors for a hairdressing program, or keys for motor vehicle technology training. Everything your child needs to follow the classes and take exams is called basic equipment. The school ensures this basic equipment is available. Your child can buy parts of this equipment themselves. This is voluntary. The school should not make you or your child feel pressured to pay. Some schools lend all needed materials.
Basic equipment learning company
Vocational internships are part of the mbo program. The recognized learning company where your child does an internship makes sure your child has everything needed for the internship. This is called the basic equipment learning company. You or your child do not have to pay for it. In specific cases, the learning company can ask your child to buy part of the basic equipment. The learning company then makes agreements with your child about a partial refund of the costs.
Education materials mbo program
Your child also needs materials for personal use. These include books, software licenses, laptop, sports, and work clothes. It must be clear before your child signs up for the program which learning materials your child needs to buy. The school can give functional specifications. For example, the minimum requirements for the laptop’s operating system. The school cannot ask for a specific brand. If you cannot buy these education materials, you might use the mbo student fund. And if you spent money on books that were not used, the mbo school must buy them back.
Voluntary contribution mbo
The school can offer extra activities and facilities for extra costs. These activities and facilities are voluntary and not necessary to follow the program and get a diploma. However, they add value to the program. The contribution is always voluntary. If you choose not to pay, your child can be excluded from the extra activities and facilities.
Input from student council and parent council
The student council has the right to approve the school’s cost policy. The school must inform the student council well. Parents can influence school costs through the parent council.
Job mbo
Job mbo is the organization that informs, advises, and represents mbo students. On their website you find an overview with the most asked questions about school costs in mbo.
