What is freedom of education?
Freedom of education means you can choose which education you want to follow or give, regardless of religion or belief. In the Netherlands, this is in the law, in article 23 of the constitution.
As a parent, you can choose which school your child goes to. You can choose between a public school or special education. The law says schools with a certain religion or belief are just as important as public schools. That is why all public and special schools get the same money from the government. This means there are many types of schools in the Netherlands. Every school must meet certain rules from the education inspectorate.
Starting your own school
According to freedom of education, anyone can start a school. You must follow certain rules of the education inspectorate. One important rule is that the mayor and council of the place where you want to start a school must approve the school.
