Your child learns a lot at school. But as a parent, you can never stop learning. Here are 10 fun and useful did you know facts about your child's education. Maybe there is one you did not know yet!

1. Did You know primary schools choose their own education concepts? 

Every primary school can decide which education concepts they use. This means that the way education is given can differ per school. Think for example of Dalton, Montessori or Freinet. Tip: ask during a tour how the school uses their chosen education concept during lessons.

 

2. Did you know primary schools experiment with active learning? 

With active learning, children combine movement with learning, for example by solving problems while running or jumping. This helps your child to concentrate better and even remember lessons better. 

3. Did you know citizenship is compulsory? 

Since 2021, citizenship has been compulsory at school. Your child learns about among others politics, diversity and how to treat others with respect. 

4. Did you know secondary schools pay more attention to personal development? 

Besides subjects such as math and history, schools pay more attention to social skills and mental health. This often happens during mentor lessons or community projects. 

5. Did you know there are secondary schools with a special program for students with talent in sports or arts?

Some secondary schools offer a program, besides the normal education program, especially for children with talent in sports or arts. This is called a profile school. The extra program is made around your child’s talent.

Vmbo-kader and vmbo-basis focus on practice-oriented learning. For children who like to work with their hands, this can be a nice way to start developing those skills. 

7. Did you know parents can often play a big role at school? 

At many schools, help from parents is very welcome. Think of help during school trips, lice checks, or even in the school participation council. Your voice has more influence than you think. 

8. Did you know you can start working right away with an mbo diploma for level 2, 3, or 4? 

With an mbo diploma for level 2, 3, or 4 your child can often start right away. Many mbo students even get a job during their internship. 

9. Did you know schools pay more attention to environmental awareness?

Sustainability is an important topic at school. Schools set up projects about recycling, saving energy, and climate change to make students aware of their impact on the world.

10. Did you know mbo students get paid during their bbl studies?

Mbo students in bbl studies like furniture maker, lighting technician, or roofer get at least a minimum salary at their work placement. That is a nice bonus!
