Central final exam secondary school students will not take place.

24 March 2020 News

The central exam (CE) for secondary school pupils will not take place this year. Schools must decide if students pass based on the school exams.

The central final exam for secondary school students will not take place this year. Schools must decide based on the school exams whether students have passed or not. This was decided by Minister Slob in consultation with education representatives. Parents & Onderwijs also supports this decision.

School exams will continue

Slob says schools must continue to hold school exams, but as much as possible remotely. Schools will also get more time to organize this. The school exams are the tests taken by schools themselves and normally count for half of the central exam.

Parents & Onderwijs calls on schools to use the extra time to immediately suspend the school exams taken at school until at least April 6. All school exams that can be taken at home should be given priority. Because the cancellation of the central final exam gives schools the opportunity to hold the school exams later.

The measures in brief

  • The central exam will not take place this school year.
  • Students can earn their diploma based on the results of their school exams.
  • Schools get more time to organize and complete the school exam safely.
  • Schools are called to hold the school exams remotely as much as possible in line with the new measures. Where needed, schools have the option to adjust their Program of Testing and Completion (PTA) to make this possible.
  • In consultation with further education, it will be looked at how students starting this year can be best prepared for their further studies given the current circumstances.
  • Information about the new pass-fail regulation and retakes will follow as soon as possible.
  • For those who take the State Exam, such as students in special education, the central written exam is also cancelled. State Exam candidates will get their diploma based on the results of the college exam. The oral college exams, which start mid-June, will still take place for now. A decision about the written college exams will be made shortly. We hope to provide more clarity early next week.
