Main points Staat van de Ouder 2022 during the webinar.

26 April 2022 News

Last Thursday we organized a webinar about the latest Staat van de Ouder. Director Lobke Vlaming and theme advisor Arline Spierenburg discussed the research results and answered participants' questions. Below we give the main points of what was discussed.

Which results from the Staat van de Ouder 2020 stand out? It appears that 70 – 75% of parents find the school advice given by the primary school fits their child. This is much lower (42%) for children with extra support. Furthermore, a large group view the final test as a good check and see its importance. This is especially true among migrants. This could be explained because children of migrant parents are often rated lower in level. The final test is important to raise the advice.

Placement

When parents disagree with the placement of their child in secondary education, 15% take action. They place their child in a broad first year class, contact the school, or register their child at another level. When choosing a secondary school, the child’s preference and the atmosphere at school are the most important. Lower-educated parents also pay more attention to school size, costs, and anti-bullying policies.

Choice

Outside the Randstad, about half of parents think there are too few secondary schools to choose from. Also, for 1 in 6 children, the school choice is decided by a lottery. In the Randstad, this is even 40%. 36% of parents do not like lotteries, and another 15% are unhappy with the lottery result. More than half of parents want a broad school community. The percentage is highest among migrant parents but also above average among the lowest group (highly educated parents). Overall, parents are happy with the transition from primary to secondary education. Most children start at the new school with satisfaction.

State of the Parent 2022: Parents do not want three-year broad first form classes

Parents do not want three-year broad first-year classes with children of all levels in one class. This shows from the research of The Staat Van De Ouder 2022, fully focused on the transition between primary and secondary education. Most parents support two levels in one first-year class. Furthermore, many parents want students to follow gym and citizenship together and want the transition between levels to improve. You can read all details in the brand new report The Staat Van De Ouder that has just been published.
