What is tailored education?.
Does your child need extra help at school? Then you may hear about ‘tailored education’. But what does that exactly mean? What can you expect from the school? And what can parents do themselves?
What does tailored education mean?
Tailored education means that every child gets education that fits what they need. Many children have enough with the regular support at school. Does your child need more help? Then the school will look with you at what is needed.
Schools must ensure a suitable place for every child. This is called duty of care. Can the school not provide the right help itself? Then the school will consult with you to look for help within the school or a place that can offer that. For example at another school or at special primary education or special education.
What support can a school offer?
- Basic support
Every school offers basic support. This is the support that is present by default. Think of extra explanation, tools for dyslexia or guidance with task and work behavior. What exactly falls under basic support can be found in the school guide.
- Extra support
Sometimes basic support is not enough. Then the school can arrange extra support. The school then makes a plan together with you (and your child). What does your child need? - Involve the partnership tailored education
Can the school not arrange the extra support itself or is the extra support not enough? Then they involve the partnership tailored education: this is a group of schools in the region that together ensure every child gets tailored education.

- Transfer to special primary education or special education
Sometimes, after (extra) support at school or help from the partnership tailored education, it still does not work. Maybe your child fits better at special primary education or special education. The current school then requests a declaration of admissibility from the partnership tailored education. They assess whether your child indeed fits better at another school.

Inclusive education is the whole system in which schools collaborate to find a suitable place for each child. Special education is one of the possibilities in that system.

In the case of inclusive education, the school also looks at what your child needs. If the school cannot provide that support, then they will look together to see which other school or educational place would be a better fit.
Some parents find that it sometimes takes a long time to arrange extra help. Also, the support varies by region. It is often a search for parents to find a suitable place or to receive suitable help at school.
The school discusses this with you and sometimes with the collaboration. Together you decide what is best for your child. Ultimately, the school has the final say on whether they can provide the appropriate support.
Yes. You as a parent have the right to approve the action part of the development perspective (OPP). This means that the school needs your permission for the action part of the plan.

A collaboration is there to ensure that every child receives the right support if things are not going well at school. They help schools, allocate funds, and participate in decisions regarding extra support or special education.
