Ziekte en school.

Your child can sometimes be sick or have a doctor's appointment. Usually your child is back at school quickly. It can also be that your child is absent for a longer time or more often. This is called long-term illness in education. The school where your child is registered is responsible for the progress of the education program. Also when your child is sick. Read everything about sickness and school and the support.

Short-term sickness or absence

Is your child sick with flu for example? Then report your child sick to the school as soon as possible, at the latest two days after the first sick day.

Does your child have a doctor, dentist or hospital appointment? Usually these appointments should be outside school hours as much as possible. Sometimes that is not possible. Notify the school on time when your child will be absent.

Every school has its own way to report your child sick or absent. You can find this in the school guide or on the school’s website.

Long-term illness in education

Sometimes there is more going on. For example, your child is long-term sick or has depression or an eating disorder. Illness can cause longer absence from school or a permanent cut in the hours your child can be at school.

Your child’s school remains responsible for giving education during sickness. Education usually continues for sick students. The school must provide enough support so education can go on as well as possible.

In some cases your child can get shorter school hours or a temporary exemption from the duty of care.

Tailored education for long-term illness

If your child cannot fully go to school, it does not mean no education is possible. If your child has a temporary mental or physical disability and cannot or can partly go to school, tailored education is possible. This is in the variawet Tailored Education.

Through the ‘adjustment of school hours’ rule your child can go below the minimum number of hours education: the hour norm. This means your child temporarily follows a reduced education program with fewer school hours. Your child stays registered at the own school.

For this rule you need the school’s support and permission from the education inspectorate. The school makes sure the development perspective plan shows the support your child needs. With that the school applies to the education inspectorate.
