Extra retake opportunity school exam.
If students have not passed after finishing the secondary school exams, they can retake a result improvement test. Students get their diploma based on the school exam grades.
This is written by minister Slob on Wednesday in a letter to the House of Representatives. This letter discusses the consequences of the cancellation of the central written exam, including the temporary pass-fail rule.
Pass-fail rule
The pass-fail rule contains the regulations for the exam and the standards that apply to pass. For this school year, a temporary rule applies. Since the central written exam is canceled, the rule that a 5.5 must be obtained no longer applies. The other standards, such as the core subjects rule and cum laude, remain. It is still possible to take exams spread over different years. The new rule also applies to the general adult education.
Result improvement tests
Each school arranges the school exams themselves, as laid down in the program of tests and final assignments (PTA). New is the extra retake opportunity after this with the result improvement tests. A student may take a result improvement test for two subjects to maybe still pass or to raise the final grade. Students in the vmbo (BB and BK) may retake three subjects. That is one more subject than before the retake of the central written exam. The grade counts for 50%. The final grade for the subject is then the average between the grade for the school exam and the grade for the result improvement test. The result improvement test is made and organized by the school itself and covers the material of the school exam.
Flags on June 4
Schools must ensure that the school exams and retakes are completed by June 4. On June 4, it will be announced whether a student has failed or passed or still needs a retake in the form of a result improvement test. Then hopefully many students can raise the flag. The result improvement tests take place before the summer holiday. The diploma ceremony will also be then.
State exam
Students in the special education, at private schools, and individual candidates mostly take their final exam via the state exam. Special attention has been given to these students in the development of the pass-fail rule. They receive the diploma this year based on the college exam. These exams are mainly oral. Extra attention is given this year to the exam process to make it as pleasant as possible for the student. The College for Tests and Exams (responsible for the state exam) speaks of tailor-made solutions. The school’s contact person is asked to discuss with parents and students what is needed for the oral exam. The location chair contacts the school’s contact person about the support needs of students. In this way, the examiner can respond well to the student’s specific situation and the candidate can show what he or she can do. The number of retakes for the state exam has also been increased, and students may retake two subjects. When a subject consists of multiple parts, the candidate can choose which part to redo. This retake option is only available for students going for the diploma and not for those wanting to get partial certificates.
Vulnerable students
We at Ouders & Onderwijs have been involved in the discussion of this new rule. We are glad that despite the difficult situation, a joint effort was made to create an exam that gives students a fair chance to get a diploma. Unfortunately, the current situation will not be favorable for all students. Therefore, the extra retake possibility and the increase in the number of subjects that can be retaken is a good expansion. The attention for extra vulnerable students in the special education who take their diploma via the state exam also hopefully offers many of these students a chance for a diploma. Together with the PO-Raad and Parent Association Balans we have worked hard for these students to ensure that their exam runs as smoothly as possible.
