Research into extra help for parents.

2 June 2022 News

The last thing you want as a parent is to be left alone. It is not strange that all help is useful for parents with children who need extra support. Parents association Balans had research done on a buddy system for these parents. The idea is that such a buddy thinks along with the parents to achieve a good cooperation with the school.

The Christian University of Applied Sciences Ede (CHE) has studied experiences of parents. The report contains a warm plea from the researchers for a buddy system. According to them, the buddy system can benefit parents, children, and schools.

Recommendations

The researchers come with the following recommendations:

  • Parent, child, and education are central. The designed buddy system must let the voice of the education, child, and parent be heard well and have plenty of space.
  • The buddy system must allow room for informal buddies. A buddy is not a professional. Support from professionals is required.
  • Despite the investments needed, the starting point is that a buddy system can save many costs in the long term.
  • After introducing a buddy system, research based on effect calculation can map out the expected benefits. This will help to legitimize the buddy system.

What is the next step?

Based on their research, the researchers advise quickly designing a buddy system that is close to the parents but also gains the trust of the education. The results of the research can help develop a good system.
