The lockdown is not over yet. All schools remain closed until February 9. An important reason is the British variant of the coronavirus, which can be dominant within a few months and may spread more easily among children. This was announced by the cabinet on Tuesday.

There are exceptions for children of parents with a crucial profession, vulnerable children, students following practical education track and exam students. We have clearly listed which students the school remains open for here.

British variant and primary schools

It will probably be known later this week whether children play a big role in spreading the new ‘British’ variant of the coronavirus. This variant is more contagious anyway. When we know more about this, it will become clear if primary schools and childcare can open earlier. Rutte says about this ‘What we do not know is if the British variant of corona is contagious for children. And how much more contagious exactly.’

One and a half meter rule

For students who fall under the exception, the one and a half meter rule is back at secondary schools. Students must keep one and a half meters distance from each other again.

Impact

Rutte is aware of the impact of the measures. ‘The longer closing of the schools causes big problems. For schools and teachers who have the unlikely task to organize distance teaching. For parents who must guide their children at home while work continues as usual and for students who must do everything behind their laptop screen. But especially for the (vulnerable) children who face learning delays.’

Lockdown

Unfortunately, infection numbers do not fall fast enough. On top of that comes the British variant of the virus, which can be dominant within a few months and may spread more easily among children. There is still uncertainty about this. So the lockdown continues. Schools remain closed and no easing of the measures is possible.
