The state of the parent

Every year Ouders & Onderwijs studies how parents think about education in The Netherlands. The results are made public in April in an (online) report: The State of the Parent.

The state of the parent 2022: To secondary education

All parents and students experience it. The transition from primary to secondary education. It is a moment when parents and children face practical questions and problems. We asked parents for their opinion. And what shows? There is still much to improve in school advice and the secondary school transition test. Many parents also feel there are too few choices for secondary school. Lastly, they do not support three-year broad first years, where children learn together on different levels. You can read more in the press release and the report The State of the Parent 2022.

‘It is worrying that in the Randstad we see more lotteries and shortage of popular schools. Outside the Randstad, we see less choice. This is because the number of schools goes down there. This is a problem because freedom of choice is really at stake.’

Parents want smaller classes by far. Large classes make parents feel the quality of education and the fun children have at school go down. We also looked at parents’ views on their relationship with school, the teacher shortage, tailored education, the parent contribution and school participation council. Read all in the state of the parent 2021.

April 2020
