What makes de schakel parent-friendly?

At primary school de schakel, parents are not only involved in schoolwork, but the school forms a close community with parents. The jury was especially touched by the concept ‘family school’. Jury chairman Mohammed Saiah says about this: ‘Nice how parents are helped in many ways within the school and can thus be more involved in their children’s education.

What parents say about the school

Parents feel taken seriously and de schakel really listens to parents’ opinions. Communication and cooperation between teachers, parent and child is an example, according to them. As one parent says: ‘We feel safe and at home.’ And it does not stop there. There is a weekly language course for parents who are less fluent and a giveaway cupboard for parents who have less. One parent describes: ‘We are really a community developing like a rocket.’

What de schakel says about parents

Primary school de schakel works from the idea that if the family is doing well, the student does better at school too. They want to build a good relationship with every parent and every family. This goes beyond just school: ‘We also help parents with things they face at home. Conversations about a child’s cognitive and social-emotional development also get more meaning and depth.’

Primary school de schakel in Utrecht is one of three schools competing for the award ‘Most parent-friendly primary school in the Netherlands.’ The other primary schools competing are Al-Ghazali in Rotterdam and De Ontdekking in Maarheeze. Also in the category secondary and secondary special education, three schools are competing for our unique award: Het Goese Lyceum in Goes, The Eligant Lyceum in Zutphen and The Vathorst College in Amersfoort.

About the award

Ouders & Onderwijs is celebrating 10 years this year. To honor this anniversary, we will present an award this fall to the most parent-friendly schools in the Netherlands: one primary school and one secondary school. With this award, we want to raise positive attention to parent involvement and parent friendliness in education. We also want to celebrate parents and schools.
