10 years Ouders & Onderwijs!

Since August 1, 2014, the law on tailored education has been in effect. According to this law, all children have the right to good education, including children who need extra support. The law gives schools a duty of care and the responsibility to ensure a as pleasant as possible place in education. From the beginning, we have been critical and active on the theme of tailored education.

The law concerning school advice has changed. Many parents call the advice desk about this. Loes Ypma from the PvdA therefore listens in for a day on the phone to get an impression of the questions parents ask.

With the Landelijk Ouderpanel, Ouders & Onderwijs maps the opinions and experiences of parents about education. With the first Staat van de Ouder we provide a clear picture of what parents think should be improved in education. 

What is effective communication between school and parents? How do you deal with prejudice and noise? Ouders & Onderwijs is working with research bureau Sardes on a research report about cooperation between parents and school.

With a gaze aimed at the future, Lobke starts as director at Ouders & Onderwijs. She continues working on the development and parental involvement and represents parents in the House of Representatives.

A first milestone! The Landelijk Ouderpanel has no less than 3500 participating parents.

The number of out‑of‑school children is increasing. Ouders & Onderwijs and Balance advocate for an integrated approach for everyone. A letter has also been written with the proposal to the House of Representatives.

The law states that for some legislative changes parents must first be consulted. Little is recorded about this law. Strengthening school participation council provides a guide about this.

The teacher shortage is affecting education. Classes are too large and students receive fewer lessons. Children have the right to good education. Lobke, director of Ouders & Onderwijs, calls on everyone to join at the Malieveld in The Hague to raise awareness for this problem. Teacher and parent: shoulder to shoulder! 

The transition to secondary education is fun and exciting. Yet many parents and children experience it less positively. Ouders & Onderwijs works together with research agency Sardes on a research report about the transition from primary education to secondary education.  

Help! It is not going well with your child at school. What do you do now? Ouders & Onderwijs has designed a support route with which parents can follow a step-by-step plan to help their child.

It is going wrong with children who need education and duty of care. The organization Angry Parents is in conversation with minister Arie Slob to discuss the associated themes.

A relief for some students in secondary education: the math test is officially abolished. After criticism of the heavy weighting on the chance of passing, both the House of Representatives and the Senate agree with this.

The parent advisory council consists of various parent organizations and parents and advises the Board on the content direction of Ouders & Onderwijs. The council meets three times a year. 

Parent association Balans organizes the work congress ‘afraid of coercion and compulsion’. Organizations and professionals from youth care and education engage in conversation about coercion and compulsion in non tailored education and the position of parents and children in this situation.

To draw attention and take action on overcrowded classes, Ouders & Onderwijs is starting a petition for smaller classes. At the moment, 10,000 people have already signed this petition. The goal is a class size of a maximum of 21 students in 2025.

There are new rules regarding the parental contribution. The new law states that when costs for extra activities are not paid, a student may not be excluded from the activity as a result.

Due to corona it was proposed to shorten the summer vacation by one week and to extend the Christmas vacation by one week. as many as 12,000 parents filled in the survey of the Landelijk Ouderpanel. 74% think this is a bad idea. fortunately it will not happen in the end. 

To properly represent students in mbo, the first mbo advisor of Ouders & Onderwijs has been hired. This way we can clearly put mbo on the map.

The quality of senior secondary vocational education must improve. That is why Ouders & Onderwijs writes a letter to the House of Representatives. The letter addresses themes such as school participation council, the quality of education, and school costs.
