Switching mbo course.
Has your child found out the study does not fit? Or does your child want to switch to another mbo course for another reason? That can! But where do you arrange that? And how does admission right or exemptions work? We explain it to you.
Switching before the start of the course
You can change course if you consider some factors. Does your child want to switch to another course before it starts? Most mbo schools accept registration after April 1. Then your child has no right to admission. This means your child can be refused even with the right vmbo diploma. Does your child have no course yet and want to join a course already started? That can up to three months after the start date.
Switching during the course
Has your child started the study but it is not as expected? Sometimes you can switch courses halfway through the school year. Your child can start the new study, for example, in February. This depends on the course and school: check with the school. Talk to the mentor, who can help your child with the switch or refer to a career advisor. Register your child anyway before April 1, so the school can not refuse. This is called admission right.
Switching mbo courses: where to go?
If your child wants to switch courses, they must take some steps:
- Talk with the mentor, who can help your child with the switch.
- Make agreements with the new course. For example, about catching up on lessons, support for disabilities, or exemptions for passed subjects.
- Enroll in the new course and sign the new education agreement.
- Unenroll from the old course.
- Don’t forget to inform DUO about the change.
Can my child register for multiple mbo courses?
If your child doubts between two studies, they can apply for both. But do this before April 1. After that, your child must choose. This gives extra time to visit open days or trial days. Some mbo courses start with a general basic year. After that year, your child chooses a direction. Once your child has chosen a course, it is important to unregister from the other course. This must be done as soon as possible, but before the school year starts. Unenroll at the mbo school. Don’t forget to update DUO.
Can my child get an exemption?
Your child chose to switch courses, but what about exemptions? Sometimes results from the previous course count for the new course. Your child then gets an exemption for that subject. You can apply for an exemption with the exam committee. You find the rules of the mbo school and exam committee contacts in the education and exam regulations.
