Home education.

In some countries, parents can teach their child at home. In the Netherlands, this is not allowed just like that. When can you teach your child at home? What rules apply? How do you organize the education at home? And what about supervision?

Conditions for home education

You need an exemption from the duty of care to give home education. There are no rules about the form or content of home education. There is no supervision on quality. There is a quality mark for home education, but this is not required. The quality standards in it can be used as a guide.

How do you give home education?

There is no standard way to give home education. Many forms and combinations exist. Some families use the same materials as at school. Other home educators choose project-based learning, more hands-on work or natural learning.

You can pick the method that works best for your child. You can use many materials and sources from the internet, distance education, school methods, experts, family and networks of home educators. On the website of the Dutch Association for Home Education you find many tips and information.

Is there supervision on home education?

No. The education inspectorate supervises schools but not home education.

Who pays for home education?

If your child goes to school, the government pays for education. If your child goes to a private school or you teach your child yourself, you pay for education.
