Bullying at the mbo.

Bullying happens everywhere, also at the mbo. You want the bullying to stop so your child can go to school with a good feeling again. What rules are there about bullying? And where can parents go for support or information? We list it for you.

Bullying

Bullying comes in many forms: from name calling to gossiping and from physical violence to exclusion. Since social media started, bullying also happens a lot online. Think of threats, creating fake accounts, spreading unwanted images, or excluding from online groups. The bad thing about the online world is that even if the bullying stops, you can still find the messages. In short: the mbo must do its best to prevent, spot, and stop bullying.

What must the mbo school do against bullying?

Mbo schools must follow the Arbowet. It says schools must protect their staff and students against psychosocial work pressure. Bullying is part of this. Every mbo school must have a trusted person where your child can go. The education inspector checks if this person is easy to reach for students and parents. And if the mbo school makes a safe place. Also, many mbo schools have a bullying protocol. It has clear rules about how students and staff must treat each other with respect.

What can you do as a parent?

Is your child at the mbo and being bullied? Then it is important to act quickly. It is most important to give attention, support, and safety. Give your child space to share bad experiences and feelings and talk about it. Let your child decide what happens and do not make decisions without involving them. Explain it is important to inform the school about the bullying so you can work together on it. Contact the trusted person at school: they know what should happen next.
