Types of schools.

Choosing a primary school can be difficult. There are many different types of schools. For example, there are schools with a certain belief, extra activities, or extra support available. What fits your child best?

What types of schools are there?

There are different types of schools:

Public school or special education

At a public school, every student and every teacher is welcome. Classes at a public school are not given from a certain belief or religion. A public school can choose to teach using a certain teaching method, such as Dalton or Montessori.

Special education is based on a certain religion or belief. For example, there are religious primary schools, like an Islamic school, where your child learns about Islam. Schools with special education can also choose a special teaching method, like Dalton, Montessori, or Jenaplan.

Schools with a special teaching method

Some schools choose a special teaching method. These methods focus on learning to set priorities, working together, or working independently.

So every child learns in a way that works for them. Special primary education schools and public primary schools can choose to teach using a special teaching method.

Broad school or integral child center (IKC)

At an integral child center, daycare, after-school care, education, and welfare activities are all in one place. This means your child does not have to get used to new buildings, children, and teachers all the time.

A broad school is a partnership tailored education between the primary school and other organizations for children. Broad schools offer normal lessons plus after-school activities, like homework help, sports lessons, or music lessons. A broad school focuses on the broad development of your child.

Special education

Some children need more help at school. For example, because they have a disability or are chronically ill. In some cases, your child can go to special education. These schools have special admission rules.

Private school

A private school is not paid by the government. You pay the school fees yourself. Private schools are often smaller. Because the classes are smaller, your child gets a lot of personal attention. The costs for a private primary school can be up to €20,000 per school year.
