Refused at mbo, what now?.
Sometimes a child is refused for a mbo course. This can not happen just like that. What are the rules? And what can you do if you do not agree? We explain this here.
Valid reasons for refusal
If your child wants to do an mbo course, the school may refuse your child. Is that allowed? No, but there are some exceptions:
- Your child does not meet additional requirements. Some courses can ask for extra study requirements. These are certain school subjects needed for a course. For example, in the technical sector, a diploma with maths, or physics and chemistry can be required. Besides a diploma, it can also be specific skills or traits needed for a job. You can think of certain art courses.
- There are more registrations than course places. Then a course can draw lots or place students in order of registration. On the course website you find how many places there are. You also find what happens if there are too many registrations.
- Your child did not join a required intake activity.
- A student registered after 1 April. The school can then select by grades or motivation.
- Your child received three negative binding study advices on an mbo course, or already follows mbo courses for six years without getting a diploma.
- Your child does not agree with the faith of the mbo school. Courses with a faith can refuse a student then.
- If your child cannot get a diploma or do the job because of a disability. The school must explain this well and write it down. They then look with your child for a suitable other course.
If you do not agree with refusal
Does the mbo school refuse your child for another reason than above? Or do you not agree for another reason? Then you can take these steps:
- File a written objection at the course within six weeks.
- The JOB gives advice to mbo students.
