Schools can set dress codes. There are some general rules for all schools.

Special education

Special education focuses on a certain worldview. Most often this is religious or philosophical. This view decides the dress codes. Short skirts and shirts are often not allowed in a christian school. Not allowing certain clothing is allowed if the school is consistent and it fits the basis of the school. The school must explain that these expressions (for example short skirts and shirts) do not belong to the school.

Subjects

In some subjects it is necessary to wear special clothes. For example chemistry, where students must wear a white coat and safety glasses. Or gym class, where gym shoes are important. These rules are in your child’s school guide.

Face covering clothing

In 2019 the partial ban on face covering clothing law became active. This law bans (among other places) schools from wearing clothing that covers the face fully or so that only the eyes are visible. Teachers, students and parents who visit the school must follow this ban. All types of face covering count, such as balaclavas, burkas, niqabs and full helmets. The following clothing is allowed and not banned: headscarf, hat, veil that does not cover the face and painted face.

The following exceptions apply:

  • Clothing needed to protect the body for health or safety reasons.
  • Clothing needed for work or sports. For example, a protective mask in fencing.
  • Clothing allowed for festive or cultural activities where covering the face is usual. For example carnival clothes.

Complaint

Parents may disagree with the school’s dress code. Try to discuss with the school management to find a solution. If this does not work you can complain about one case (not general policy).

More information about complaints is in the school guide. Parents can also take the problem to the school participation council. The school participation council can bring it to a meeting and see if the policy should change.

Discrimination

If discrimination happens parents can complain to the human rights commission. They can report a problem or ask for a judgement. The judgement means the complaint is handled at a public hearing.
