School costs mbo.

When following an mbo course you face different costs. What costs are these? Who pays which costs? And what are the rules? We list these for you.

Costs mbo course

If your child goes to mbo you face different school costs:

  • Legally required tuition and course fees: paid by parents or student
  • Basic equipment school: paid by the mbo school
  • Basic equipment company: paid by the company
  • Education supplies: paid by the parents or student
  • Voluntary contribution for extra activities: paid by the parents or student

Legally required tuition and course fees

A student who signs up for an mbo course pays the legally required tuition or course fee. Does your child follow a full-time BOL course? Then you pay the legally set tuition fee. Students who follow a BBL course or part-time BOL pay the legally set course fee. More information and the amount can be found on the website of the Rijksoverheid. Mbo students under 18 do not pay tuition or course fees.

Basic equipment school

For some courses you need tools. For example, knives for a cooking course, scissors for a hairdressing course or keys for motor vehicle technology. Everything your child needs to follow the course at school and take the exam is called basic equipment. The school makes sure this basic equipment is available. Your child can buy parts of the basic equipment themselves. This is voluntary. It is not the intention that you or your child feel pressured by the school to pay these costs. Some schools lend all needed materials free of charge.

Basic equipment company

Work internships are part of the mbo course. The recognized company where your child does the internship makes sure your child has everything needed for the internship. This is called basic equipment company. You or your child do not have to pay for this. In special cases the company can ask your child to buy part of the basic equipment. The company then agrees with your child about a (partial) refund of the costs.

Education supplies mbo course

Your child also needs materials for personal use. These include books, software licenses, laptop, sports and work clothes. Before your child registers for the course it must be clear which learning materials your child must buy. The school can give functional requirements. For example, minimal system requirements for the laptop. The school can however not demand a specific brand. If you cannot buy these education supplies you may be able to use the mbo student fund. And if you spent money on books that were not used, the mbo school must buy those back.

Voluntary contribution mbo

The school can offer extra activities and facilities at extra cost. These activities and facilities are voluntary and not needed to follow the course or get a diploma. They do add value to the course. The contribution is always voluntary. If you do not pay, your child can be excluded from the extra activities and facilities.

Advice students council and parent council

The students council has the right to agree to the school costs policy at a school. The school must inform the students council well. Via the parent council you as a parent can influence school costs.

JOB mbo

JOB mbo is the organization that informs, advises and represents mbo students. On their website you find a list with the most asked questions about school costs in mbo.
